Wordle Bulletin #730 (June 19, 2023) — “Wordle has gone up the Wazoo!”

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Top 11 consonants in terms of frequency of use (in any of the 5 positions): R T L S N C H P D G M

Rank order of the 6 vowels (including Y) in terms of frequency of use (in any of the 5 positions): E A O I U Y

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Typical Wordle: 2 vowels (counting Y as the sixth vowel), 1 compound (ex KN)/paired consonant (ex NN)
Today’s Wordle: KAZOO (Atypical)

NYT WordleBot average score: 5.1 (per Marc McLaren*)
WordleGuru score:  4 😊

Seed Word: ALTER: It is the first word of the triad – ALTER/SONIC/PUDGY.

2nd Word: PIOUS: It is not the second word of the triad.
Reason for selection: A typical Wordle word has 2 vowels. The seed word revealed only 1 vowel (A).  PIOUS has the next 3 most frequent vowels (next to A and E).  It also has 2 high frequency consonants (S, and P).
What we learned: More than 20 possible answers. ☹
Next step: Deploy the first round of the EnotE© strategy. In view of the large number of possible answers, it was not possible for one word to eliminate all but one possible word.  Two rounds of the EnotE© strategy might be needed today.

3rd Word: MACHO: It is not the third word of the triad.
Reason for selection: The first two words did not reveal any consonants.  Also, the positions of the 2 vowels were not revealed.  The objective of the 3rd word was to 1) confirm the positions of the vowels and 2) reveal consonants.  I picked MACHO for these reasons.
What we learned: We were able to confirm the positions of the two vowels.  Interestingly, the target word does not contain any of the 11 most frequent consonants!  This is quite rare.  However, there are not that many words that include the two vowels (A and O) and none of the top 11 consonants.  At this stage only 3 possible words – BANJO, KAZOO, and WAZOO.
Next step: Deploy the second round of the EnotE© strategy.

4th word: KAZOO: I always prefer to use one of the possibilities as an elimination word if it makes sense (when there are 5 or less possibilities).  The reason is that once in a while the word I choose from the list of possibilities happens to be the target word. Indeed, this was the case today. Had I not lucked out, I could easily have ended up with a score of 5.

COMMENT: KAZOO is not a commonly used word, especially outside of the US.
