Wordle Bulletin #668 (April 18, 2023) — “D… 6 Orthographic Neighbor Words!”

Today’s Wordle:
Target Word
: HOUND
# Of Guesses:
4.6 WordleBot average per Marc McLaren*, 5 for WordleGuru. ☹

Seed Word: ALTER – Changed from STARE (3/8-4/17).
What we learned from the Seed Word: No revelations! ☹

2nd word: SONIC: (2nd word in my “go-to” triad — ALTER/SONIC/PUDGY). It revealed 1 consonant (N) but not its position and 1 vowel (O) in the 2nd spot. At this stage 7 possibilities including 6 orthographic neighbor words [WOUND, POUND, HOUND, MOUND, BOUND, and FOUND], YOUNG.   Time to deploy the EnotE© strategy.

Please note that the 1st and 2nd word duos STARE/COLIN and ALTER/SONIC cover the same 10 letters.  In a way the duos are interchangeable (except for Green vs. Yellow).

3rd word: BUMPY: I could not come up with a word that would eliminate 6 of the 7 words.  It was clear that I would have to apply EnotE© strategy twice.  This word only eliminated 4 of the 7, leaving me with 3 words to deal with – WOUND, HOUND and FOUND.

4th word: WHARF: It led me to the answer – HOUND.

The seed word (STARE/ALTER) and the second word (COLIN/SONIC) represent the 10 most frequent letters in the Wordle-words to-date. The 3rd word (PUDGY) represents 5 of the next 6 highest frequency letters (11-16).

Final Thoughts: Wordle is a game of luck and skill. Sometimes luck favors the game and sometimes it favors the player. Today’s Wordle was a “doozy”.  I don’t remember seeing a Wordle puzzle with 6 orthographic neighbor words! Luck was a major factor today in terms of picking the right seed word (and 2nd word to go with it).  It wasn’t the case with my selections. ☹
