Wordle Bulletin #708 (May 28, 2023) — “1 of the 10 possible words chosen as an elimination word proved to be the answer, confirming the power of this strategy!!”
Today’s Wordle:
Target Word: SKIMP (Non-Typical – 1 vowel, 2 compound/ paired consonants) [typical – 2 vowels, 1 compound/paired consonant]
# Of Guesses: 4.1 WordleBot average per Marc McLaren*, 3 for WordleGuru 😊
Seed Word: ROATE: first word of the triad – ROATE/SULCI/NYMPH
What we learned from the Seed Word: No revelations! Since most of the Wordle words have 2 vowels, I needed to search for additional vowels.
2nd Word: SULCI: The second word of the triad. It revealed 1 consonant (S) in the first position and 1 vowel (I), but not its position. At this stage 10 possibilities including 2 sets of orthographic neighbor words – [SNIFF, SPIFF, SKIFF], [SHINY, SPINY/SPIKY], FUNKY, SKIMP, SISSY, and SMITH. Time to deploy the EnotE© strategy.
3rd Word: SKIMP: My gutfeel was telling me that the answer is SHINY for 2 reasons – 1) SH is the most frequent compound consonant starting with an S, and 2) the last time a target word ended in Y was on May 4, 24 days ago vs. expected frequency of once every 8 days. Going with the gutfeel when the possible answers are more than 3 is a risky move. The safe way of playing is the EnotE© strategy. That’s what I did.
Today, I could not think of a word that would have eliminated 9 of the 10 possibilities. So, I had to look for the second-best option. I chose SKIMP as the elimination word. SKIMP has 3 high frequency consonants and with I in the third position, I tried to confirm I’s position in the target word.
I always prefer to use one of the possibilities as an elimination word if it makes sense. The reason is that once in a while the word I choose from the list of possibilities happens to be the target word. Indeed, this was the case today. Had I not lucked out, I could easily have ended up with a score of 4/5/6. 😊
Final Thoughts: Wordle is a game of luck and skill. Sometimes luck favors the game and sometimes it favors the player. Today luck was in my favor big time. 😊
