Wordle Bulletin #731 (June 20, 2023) — “Parade of 4’s!”
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Top 11 consonants in terms of frequency of use (in any of the 5 positions): R T L S N C H P D G M
Rank order of the 6 vowels (including Y) in terms of frequency of use (in any of the 5 positions): E A O I U Y
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Typical Wordle: 2 vowels (counting Y as the sixth vowel), 1 compound (ex KN)/paired consonant (ex NN)
Today’s Wordle: FROST (Atypical)
NYT WordleBot average score: 3.5 (per Marc McLaren*)
WordleGuru score: 4 ☹
Seed Word: ALTER: It is the first word of the triad – ALTER/SONIC/PUDGY.
2nd Word: PIOUS: It is not the second word of the triad.
Reason for selection: A typical Wordle word has 2 vowels. The seed word did not reveal any vowels. PIOUS has the next 3 most frequent vowels (next to A and E). It also has 2 high frequency consonants (S, and P).
What we learned: PIOUS revealed one vowel- O in the 3rd position. At this stage there are 8 possible answers including 2 sets of orthographic neighbor sets – FROST, ROOST, [SHORT, SNORT, SKORT], [STORK, STORM, STORY]. ☹
Next step: Deploy the EnotE© strategy.
3rd Word: STORY: It is not the third word of the triad.
Reason for selection: I always prefer to use one of the possibilities as an elimination word if it makes sense (preferably when there are 5 or less possibilities). The reason is that once in a while the word I choose from the list of possibilities happens to be the target word. It wasn’t the case today. However, STORY eliminated all but 2 words – FROST and ROOST.
Next step: Select between the two possibilities.
4th word: FROST: I used frequency data to select FROST over ROOST. Thankfully it worked. I won the coin toss today. 😊
