Wordle Bulletin # 490 (October 22, 2022)
My strategy is built to ensure I solve 95% of the puzzles in 4 guesses or less. It is not built to always shoot for the lowest score possible.
Target Word: SPIEL
Typical Wordle Word Construct: 2 Vowels and one compound consonant (2 letters or 3 letters; seen with >50% frequency)
Today’s Wordle Word Construct: Typical; 2 vowels (E, I); 1 compound consonant (SP)
# Of Guesses: 3.6 WordleBot average per Marc McLaren*; 4 for WordleGuru
Seed Word: SOARE
Seed Word Revelations: 1 vowel (E) but not its position; 1 consonant (S) in the exact position
# Of Possible Solutions after the Seed Word: Too many
Second Word: UNITY; Since most of the Wordle words have two vowels, I needed to search for the second vowel, if there was any. The standard go to word for this is UNITY.
Revelations from the 2nd word: One vowel (I) in the middle position.
# Of Possible Solutions after the Second Word:7, 2 of which are the singular versions of verbs. Wordle words to date have not included such words. So practically speaking I was dealing with 5 words. The five are [SHIED, SKIED, SPIED], SEISM and SPIEL. As we can see, three of the five words are orthographic neighbor words. WordleGod has been quite active lately when it comes to orthographic neighbor words. Now it was time to apply my EnotE strategy. The elimination word I came up with is HIKED.
Third Word: HIKED; it eliminated all with the exception of SPIEL.
# Of Possible Solutions after the third Word: 1 – the target word SPIEL
EnotE (Eliminate-not-Enumerate) Strategy deployment: This Wordle is a good example of the power of the EnotE strategy.
Gutfeel: Usually when there are orthographic neighbor words, the target word is one of those. I was expecting this to be true for today’s word also. However, today that wasn’t the case.
Final thoughts: Wordle outcome has a lot to do with luck, not just skill. Since I didn’t try to solve it in 3 guesses, I didn’t bait LadyLuck today. On the other hand, WordleGod was up to his old tricks with 1 set of orthographic neighbor words among the possible answers.
