Wordle Bulletin # 499 (October 31, 2022)
My strategy is built to ensure I solve 95% of the puzzles in 4 guesses or less.
It is not built to always shoot for the lowest score possible.
The score depends a lot on the seed word.
Wordle is a game of luck and skill.
Target Word: APTLY
Typical Wordle Word Construct: 2 Vowels and one compound/paired consonant (2 letters or 3 letters; seen with >50% frequency)
Today’s Wordle Word Construct: Typical; 2 Vowels (A and Y), 1 Compound consonant (3 letters PTL; interestingly yesterday they had LTZ!)
# Of Guesses: 3.9 WordleBot average per Marc McLaren*; 4 for WordleGuru
Seed Word: LOSER; I decided to test my hypothesis that on two successive days they won’t use the same vowels. Yesterday they used A so today I thought I would try EO. Still using high frequency letters my seed word became LOSER.
Seed Word Revelations: No vowel; 1 consonant (L), but not its position
# Of Possible Solutions after the seed word: Too many
Second Word: CHANT; it includes high frequency vowel (A) and high frequency consonants (C, H, N, and T)
Second Word Revelations: One vowel (A) and 1 consonant (L), but not their positions
# Of Possible Solutions after the second word: 5 – APTLY, TALLY, TIDAL, VITAL and FATAL. It was time to deploy the EnotE strategy.

EnotE (Eliminate-not-Enumerate) Strategy deployment: I had a hunch/gut feel that the last letter is a Y. I always prefer to choose one of the possibilities as the elimination word. With that in mind, I had to choose between APTLY and TALLY as the elimination word. I chose TALLY and it proved to be wrong. It led to the target word – APTLY.

Hindsight: I did not choose the right word as the second word, since my hunch was that the 5th letter is a “Y”. That was a mental error. YATCH would have been a better second word.

Final thoughts: Wordle is a game of luck and skill. So much depends on the seed word. Today’s seed word revealed only 1 letter and that too not in its correct position. LadyLuck was not on my side today

Statistics corner: A in the first position and Y in the last position have only been used twice – ANGRY and ABBEY. Whereas T in the first position and Y in the last position have only been used thrice – TIPSY, TODAY, and TANGY
