Wordle Bulletin #648 (March 29, 2023) — “After a string of 3s, a 4 is to be expected (regression to the mean)”

Today’s Wordle:
Target Word
: BESET
# Of Guesses:
4.1 WordleBot average per Marc McLaren*, 4 for WordleGuru 😐

Seed Word: STARE – The “go-to” seed word starting March 8, 2023.
What we learned from the Seed Word: The seed word revealed 2 consonants (S,T), and 1 vowel (E) but not their positions.  Too many possibilities at this stage.  Need more exploration.

2nd word: COLIN: (2nd word of the triad STARE/COLIN/PUDGY): No revelations! Still, it narrowed the field to just 9 words – BESET, FETUS, [GUEST, QUEST], EGEST, UPSET, [TESTY, PESTY, ZESTY].  As you can see, two sets of orthographic neighbor words (ouch). Time to deploy the EnotE© strategy.

3rd word: PUDGY: (3RD  word of the triad STARE/COLIN/PUDGY):  I could not come up with one word to eliminate 8 of the 9 possibilities.  The 2nd best alternative I came up with after some deliberation interestingly is the 3rd word of the triad!    Luckily it worked and led me to the target word – BESET.

The seed word (STARE) and the second word (COLIN) represent the 10 most frequent letters in the Wordle-words to-date. The 3rd word (PUDGY) represents 5 of the next 6 highest frequency letters (11-16).

Final Thoughts: Wordle is a game of luck and skill. Sometimes luck favors the game and sometimes it favors the player. Today luck was on my side. It could easily have required one more guess. 😊
