Wordle Bulletin #716 (June 5, 2023) — “Ennui! Phooey!!!!”

Today’s Wordle:
Target Word
: ENNUI (NonTypical3 vowels, 1 compound/ paired consonants) [typical – 2 vowels, 1 compound/paired consonant]
# Of Guesses: 4.3 WordleBot average per Marc McLaren*, 4 for WordleGuru. 😊

Seed Word: ALTER: first word of the triad – ALTER/SONIC/PUDGY.
What we learned from the Seed Word: It revealed 1 vowel (E) but not its position. Most of the Wordle words have 2 vowels, therefore I needed to search for additional vowels.

2nd Guess: SONIC: The second word of the triad. It revealed 1 consonant (N) in the 3rd position and 1 vowel (I), but not its position. At these stage 4 possibilities, including 1 set of orthographic neighbor words – [HINGE, BINGE, and DINGE], and ENNUI.

3rd Word: BOUGH: My gut feel was telling me that ENNUI and DINGE are not very commonly used words. So, the choice was between BINGE and HINGE. I could not come up with a viable reason to say one or the other is the target word.  The frequency data was not discriminating either, so I decided to use the EnotE© strategy. I chose BOUGH as the elimination word.  It worked. 😊

ENNUI defies the frequency approach. The frequency of paired consonants is low, and the frequency of three vowels is also low.  As we know, frequency data only points to what’s probable not what’s possible.

Final Thoughts: Wordle is a game of luck and skill. Sometimes luck favors the game and sometimes it favors the player. Today luck was not a factor.
