Wordle Bulletin # 483 (October 15, 2022)

*** Today’s Wordle provided an opportunity to showcase the power of the EnotE strategy.***

Target Word: CATCH
Typical Wordle Word Construct
: 2 Vowels and one or more compound consonants (seen with >50% frequency)
Today’s Wordle Word Construct: A-Typical; 1 vowel (A); one rare length of 3 compound consonant (TCH)
# Of Guesses: 4.6 WordleBot average per Marc McLaren*; 4 for WordleGuru

Seed Word: SOARE
Seed Word Revelations:
A, but not its position
# Of Possible Solutions after the Seed Word: Too many to count!

Second Word: UNITY
Revelations from the 2nd word: Just 1 consonant (T) but not its position; despite this apparent failure, the number of possibilities were reduced to just 8 – quite an achievement; BATCH, CATCH, MATCH, WATCH, PATCH, LATCH, HATCH, and FATAL
# Of Possible Solutions after the Second Word: 8; it was time to deploy the Eliminate-not-Enumerate strategy, especially since 7 of the 8 possible answers were orthographic neighbor words where only the first letter changes.

EnotE (Eliminate-not-Enumerate) Strategy deployment: It was a bit tricky to come up with a single word to eliminate 7 of the 8 possibilities. So, it came down to picking one that had the best chance of eliminating the greatest number of possibilities.  I narrowed the choice to CHIMP.  Miracles do happen! It did the job.

Final thoughts: Wordle outcome has a lot to do with luck, not just skill. It’s clear that LadyLuck was on my side today despite the fact WordleGod acted fiendishly.
