Wordle Bulletin # 617 (February 26, 2023) — “Often gutfeel is right!”

Today’s Wordle:
Target Word: SYRUP
# Of Guesses: 3.8 WordleBot average per Marc McLaren*, 4 for WordleGuru. ☹

Typical or atypical target word? — Atypical, it contains 2 vowels (U and Y) but  no compound consonant. The “norm” is 2 vowels and 1 compound/paired consonant.

Seed Word: ALERT – “go-to” seed word.
What we learned from the Seed Word: The seed word revealed only one letter (R), but not its position.

2nd word: SONIC (the “go-to” 2nd word);
It revealed the presence of S in the 1st position. 4 possibilities at this stage — [SHRUG, SHRUB], SMURF and SYRUP. I discounted SMURF. Time to deploy the EnotE© strategy. My gutfeel was leading me to SYRUP. Regretfully, it would not have eliminated the 2 orthographic neighbor words SHRUG, and SHRUB! So, playing conservatively, I picked SHRUG (SHRUB too would have done the job).

3rd word: SHRUG: it eliminated 2 of the remaining 3 and led to the answer – SYRUP.

Final thoughts: Wordle is a game of luck and skill.   Sometimes luck favors the game and sometimes it favors the player. Today luck was not on my side.

A friend of mine uses a slightly different strategy.  When there are only 3 words to choose from, he doesn’t go the EnotE route.  He lets his gutfeel guide him.
