Wordle Bulletin #649 (March 30, 2023) — “Another 4! (regression to the mean)”
Today’s Wordle:
Target Word: BREAD
# Of Guesses: 3.7 WordleBot average per Marc McLaren*, 4 for WordleGuru ☹
Seed Word: STARE – The “go-to” seed word starting March 8, 2023.
What we learned from the Seed Word: The seed word revealed 1 consonant (R), and 2 vowels (A and E) but not their positions. Too many possibilities at this stage. Need more exploration.
2nd word: CLEAN: (not the 2nd word of the triad STARE/COLIN/PUDGY): Since most of the Wordle words have 2 vowels, I chose to not search for additional vowels. Instead, I chose a word that would help me identify the positions of the two vowels already revealed, i.e., A and E. Luckily, it revealed the positions of both the vowels. The word is CLEAN. Six possibilities at this stage, including 2 sets of orthographic neighbor words – DREAM, [DREAD, BREAD], [BREAK, FREAK, WREAK]. Time to deploy the EnotE© strategy.
3rd word: BAKED: I could not come up with one word to eliminate 5 of the 6 possibilities. The 2nd best alternative I came up with after some deliberation is BAKED. Luckily it worked and led me to the target word – BREAD.
The seed word (STARE) and the second word (COLIN) represent the 10 most frequent letters in the Wordle-words to-date. Today for the reasons explained already, I chose CLEAN instead of COLIN. Please note that both words have the same consonants.
Final Thoughts: Wordle is a game of luck and skill. Sometimes luck favors the game and sometimes it favors the player. Today luck was on my side. It could easily have required one more guess. 😊
