Wordle Bulletin # 497 (October 29, 2022)
My strategy is built to ensure I solve 95% of the puzzles in 4 guesses or less.
It is not built to always shoot for the lowest score possible.
The score depends a lot on the seed word.
Wordle is a game of luck and skill.
Target Word: LIBEL
Typical Wordle Word Construct: 2 Vowels and one compound/paired consonant (2 letters or 3 letters; seen with >50% frequency)
Today’s Wordle Word Construct: A-Typical; 2 vowels (I and E), no Compound/paired consonant
# Of Guesses: 4.4 WordleBot average per Marc McLaren*; 5 for WordleGuru ☹
Seed Word: SOARE
Seed Word Revelations: 1 vowel (E), but not its position; no consonant ☹
# Of Possible Solutions after the second word: Too many
Second Word: UNITY; majority of Wordle words have 2 or 3 vowels. Therefore, we needed to search for additional vowels. UNITY is the go-to word for this purpose.
Second Word Revelations: 1 vowel (I), but not its position; no consonant ☹
# Of Possible Solutions after the second word: 17 with several sets of orthographic neighbor words and anagram. It was time to deploy the EnotE strategy. I could not think of a word that would eliminate 16 of the 17 or even half of the 17. The best that I could come up with was FLIMP. Yes, FLIMP is a Scrabble word.
Third Word: FLIMP
Third Word Revelations: 1 vowel (I) and 1 consonant (L) but not their position; So, after three guesses, I had revealed 3 letters but not their positions. The objective of the third word was to eliminate as many of the possibilities from the 17 as possible.
# Of Possible Solutions after the third Word: 6 with 1 set of orthographic neighbor words and one set of anagrams -{LIVED, DEVIL}, [LIVED, LIKED] , LIBEL, HELIX, and GELID. It was time to deploy the EnotE strategy again.
Fourth Word: I needed to come up with another elimination word. I prefer to pick one of the possibilities as an elimination word if it makes sense. I picked DEVIL. It did the job and led me to the target word – LIBEL.

EnotE (Eliminate-not-Enumerate) Strategy deployment: Due to the large number of possibilities after the second word, I had to deploy the EnotE strategy twice.

Final thoughts: Wordle is a game of luck and skill. So much depends on the seed word. Today LadyLuck was not on my side. WordleGod was in a fiendish mood. A different seed word would have resulted in a different score.

Statistics corner: A Wordle word’s beginning and ending letters are L’s only for the 3rd time since the start of the game. The other 2 words are LAPEL, and LABEL.
