Wordle Bulletin # 469 (October 1, 2022)

Target Word: LEAVE
Typical Wordle Word Construct
: 2 Vowels and one or more compound consonants (seen with >50% frequency)
Today’s Wordle Word Construct: Atypical; 3 vowels (1 A and 2 Es) and no compound consonant
# Of Guesses required :4.2 per NYT’s WordleBot via Marc McLaren*; 4 for WordleGuru

Seed Word: SOARE
Seed Word Revelations: 2 vowels (A and E) in their exact positions; no consonants
Second Word: CLAMP There were more than 100 possible answers after the 1st guess.
Primary Objective for the 2nd word: Deploy the EnotE (Eliminate not Enumerate) strategy.   i.e., find a word that would eliminate maximum number of possibilities.  There is no 5-letter word to do that. I needed to come close, and I did with CLAMP. After CLAMP, only three possibilities remained – WHALE, LEAVE and QUALE. I used frequency data and selected WHALE.  WHALE is a “typical” Wordle word – 2 vowels and 1 compound constant. But, the WordleGod had LEAVE in mind.
Final thoughts: Wordle is a game of luck and skill. LadyLuck was not on my side, unlike yesterday. The EnotE strategy worked in narrowing down the choice to 3 words only but didn’t lead me to an easy victory. 🙁
